| “ | I was erased. From the glyphs, my people's stories, as if I never existed. I was one of the most powerful of the gods, the great sky-watcher. I taught the people to read the stars, to plant their harvest at the appointed time, to prepare for the seasons. But then I made a grave mistake. I told of a prophecy the gods didn't want to hear. | ” |
–Pacific explaining why the other gods erased her existence in The Storm Runner. | ||
Pacific, also known as the Water Lily Jaguar, is the former Maya goddess of time.
History
Water Lily Jaguar on a mountain in between a demon and Chaac.
In another iteration, Pacific was known as the Water Lily Jaguar. Many archaeologists believed her to be involved with sacrifice due to depictions of her wearing a collar of eyeballs. She has also been depicted with many water lily flowers on or around her. It is believed that the Mayas associated her with royalty, libation, rainy season, fertility, and even fire.[1]
Pacific used to be one of the most powerful of the gods, she was even on the council of the Old World. She taught the people to read the stars, plant their harvest at the appointed time, and prepare for the seasons. However, as her powers grew so did the other gods' fear of her, so in order to protect herself she changed her truth, and who she was, even though it did not stop the other gods from trying to get rid of her.
Years ago, Pacific recited the Prophecy of Fire in which Ah-Puch, the imprisoned great god of death, and evil will released by a powerful innocent (someone who has no knowledge of their lineage) born with ancient blood, the Storm Runner, during a solar eclipse. The gods got frightened because it brought to mind the hero twins, the very first godborns from Ixkik'. The twins inspired jealousy in the gods, so the gods established a law that no godborns would ever be born. But Pacific's prophecy made them so angry, they erased her from all accounts and documents and sentenced her to death. However, she was spared by Hurakan and haven to K'ukumatz, who kept her chained in the ocean.
In Series
Out of anger at the gods, she found a man of supernatural Mexica heritage and had a daughter with him to anger the Mayan gods.
Storm Runner Trilogy
The Storm Runner
Pacific appears to Zane Obispo in San Diego after her Prophecy of Fire was fulfilled. She tells him how the gods made it illegal for them to have children with humans under the threat of death for them and their children. She gives him a tooth made out of Jaguar Jade and calls him storm runner before sending him to shore.
Pacific later comes to Zane with K'ukumatz to inform him that they will shave a few hours of his trip. Although Zane was successful in killing Ah-Puch, he was forced by Ixtab to write about his story on the truth paper of Itzam-yée'. As a result, Pacific was to be exposed to the gods. So she was forced to find a new hiding place, but not before giving Zane one last "parting gift" by speeding up time so he could get to Isla Holbox.
The Fire Keeper
Ren Santiago, her godborn daughter.
She angrily barges into the gods meeting and later claims Ren Santiago as her daughter. Later she arrives on Isla Holbox and meets Ren's abuelo, she gives her daughter a small gold watch to help her control her abilities and explains that her absence seizures are a gateway to her powers.
The Shadow Crosser
Zane sees his first encounter with her as he is walking through Chapat. She is imprisoned within Tlaltecuhtli along with the other gods and trapped in 1987. When the Mexica earth goddess is brought back to the present, she is found in the form of a teenager by Ren along with Ah-Puch, they head to Hurakan's treehouse afterwards to hear Ixkik' is hunting down the gods and orders Zane to come to the Ceiba World Tree. She tells the son of Hurakan how to speak with Ixkik' and, after he surrenders, she and the others agree to find as many gods as they can.
Shadow Bruja Duology
Lords of Night
Pacific appears to Ren and her friends as they are braving the Maze of Nightmares. The goddess says the Time Rope called to her and she reclaimed it temporarily to learn what her daughter has been up to. Pacific reveals she cannot intervene to a greater extent or destroy the maze, but tells Ren that the maze feeds gets angry if people take too long to decide and to give the maze what it wants. Pacific returns the Time Rope and leaves.
Dawn of the Jaguar
When Ren encounters Saqik'oxol in the Old World and she dives into a pond to find her godborn power, Pacific refuses to help her daughter in the life threatening situation. Once Ren finds her power, she brings her girl to her sanctuary and heals her. When Ren wakes up, Pacific informs the girl that she has sent for her companions, but expresses her distain for befriending a demon. Ren defends her choice in friends as the lillies start to talk. Ren then berates her for not saving her when she was in the pond, but Pacific says it was necessary to help her find her true power. Ren contemplates on feeling like her Mayan and Mexica abilities could not exist in the same body as she notices Pacific wearing the Time Rope. The goddess reveals it went to the Old World to charge and has informed her of current events, calling her daughter’s deal with Ixtab foolish. As Ren gets agitated, she asks her mother what her powers are. Pacific does not say, she realizes that the lillies reveal they were sacred to the Water Lily Jaguar, an ancient deity. As Pacific says Ren is about to learn truths, the girl looks at her reflection in the pond and sees she has two jaguar ears on top of her head. Ren panics as her mother tells her to calm down. Ren questions how this is possible when she realizes Pacific is not Water Lily Jaguar. Pacific reveals that she was originally known as the Water Lily Jaguar, but had to change her identity to hide when the other gods started to fear her. Soon Ren's jaguar ears vanish and Pacific says they will only appear when her senses are heightened. When Ren asks what she could do, but her mother does not elaborate. Instead, the goddess takes Ren to the outskirts of her territory and transforms into a large jaguar. Ren then smells Ah-Puch and Edison, to which her mother reveals they arrived three minutes ago. She and Ren run until they reach a canyon. Pacific easily jumps it and encourages a hesitant Ren to follow. Ren does so but does not make it. She falls and Pacific encourages her daughter to get back up. After her daughter sees a vision of her friend in trouble, the girl leaps up the cliff and she congratulates the girl. They walk to a coastline where they meet up with Ah-Puch and Edison, with the god telling the demon not to trust Pacific. When the two groups meet, they sit at a table as Ren catches the two up. Ah-Puch is furious upon hearing the news and Pacific forces him swear to secrecy. After things get tense between the gods, Ren and Edison try to ease the tension. After Ah-Puch demands the Time Rope back, Ren is confused as to why it did not return to him. Pacific explains that the Time Rope was corrupted by Ah-Puch's presence and reformed itself, allowing it to choose a new owner, Pacific. The goddess gives her daughter a strand of the Time Rope, saying it will freeze time for a few minutes at most. Soon after, her daughter and her companions head out.
After Ren and her allies take on the Lords of Night in their own realm, she tells Ren to use the thread to its fullest extent, but does not explain how.
