The Nico di Angelo Adventures

The Court of the Dead

Shortly after resetting in Camp Jupiter, Hazel Levesque brings Nico di Angelo and Will Solace to the mythic's barracks to introduce the boys to the refugees. Johan greets the boys as the others come out. Upon hearing their talking to them, Nico and Will agree to help get the Twelfth Legion Fulminata to accept them.

Later that day, Johan and the other mythics go to the Mess Hall for dinner, causing a tense atmosphere with the legion. When they leave, the legionnaires lighten up and talk loudly the second they are out of sight.

The following day, Johan greets Nico, Will, and Hazel when they reach the mythics' quarters. When the boys see a path of Tartarus's skin in the middle of the room, Asterion explains that they are trying to grow Regeneration Pods at Camp Jupiter to avoid returning to Tartarus. Hazel reveals she knows about it but is keeping it secret. After Hazel reveals the Second Cohort has agreed to work with the mythics, the daughter of Pluto starts to ask about their strengths. He reveals he enjoys history and libraries, so Hazel considers putting him in the archives. The training session begins well, with Johan holding his own against two legionnaires, when one of the campers, Savannah, suffers a panic attack and is escorted to the infirmary. At dinner, the atmosphere is tenser than usual as the campers keep their distance from the mythics. However, Hazel sits with them. After the meal, he and Quinoa are harassed by demigods until Nico steps in.

The following day, he is put in the archives when a demigod arrives and asks him for something. The demigod then attempts to throw it at Johan, but it activates as he was still holding it, freezing the demigod in place. He has Will call Nico and, when Hazel comes with him, Johan has her wait outside, which she begrudgingly agrees to do. After telling Nico what happened, Johan explains the device is called a Dodecahedron, which is meant to trap or immobilize mythics or anyone with godly heritage. After explaining how to unfreeze the demigod, Nico takes a device from his hands and deactivates it. The demigod unfreezes and runs off as Johan explains that he called Nico in as he had no idea how to handle the situation. The boys tell Johan that he needs to set boundaries and that he can say no at times. Johan leaves as Will joins the Fifth Cohort for more training and Nico goes to the Field of Mars.

Later on, he learns that Savannah had another incident while sparring with Arielle. He and Asterion go to the Mess Hall to discuss this. Asterion thinks that Arielle might have the right idea about leaving Camp Jupiter as Hazel rebuffs this. Thinking about what Semele told him, Nico asks him about the mythic's pursuers. He reveals that they are not the first mythics to fight their fates, that others have tried before them and vanished. He reveals that they have messages in their dreams, something the demigods say they experience as well, surprising both parties. When they get over the surprise, Johan says they have been visited by figures saying they will be judged. Nico reveals he has been having the same dreams, but no one knows who is behind it. The two head back to their quarters and, early the following morning, realize Arielle is missing. They send Semele to contact Hazel and the daughter of Pluto takes Nico and Will with her to investigate. The praetor intends to form a search party while the mythics debate on staying put or not. While Johan, is unnerved, he is grateful for the support. However, despite their best efforts, Asterion is taken. Semele takes charge and tells Orcus and Johan they will leave in the morning. Hazel tries to talk them out of it and asks Nico if he sensed anything out of the ordinary. The son of Hades states he felt something shortly before the others as he realizes he was in contact with one of the cacodemons. When Semele questions how the perpetrator could get passed Hazel, the girl explains that the Mist is meant to trick the minds of mortals and that, due to their mix of divine and mortal heritage, they can see through the Mist to an extant, but can still be tricked by it. As the perpetrator could see through Hazel's illusion, she thinks they are dealing with a minor god. After realizing Hazel is the next target, Frank suggests they hunker down in their vault and Hazel invites the mythics and asks Nico to lend her a cacodemon. He agrees and the praetors decide to focus security on a single area for better chances at success. After persuasion, the mythics agree to stay one more night and everyone turns in.

By morning, everyone at Camp Jupiter begins to take the disappearances seriously after learning that Hazel is a target as well. A few even pledge to keep the remaining mythics safe. He, Semele, and Orcus join Nico, Will, and the praetors to finalize the plan. Nico, Will, Hazel and the mythics will spend the night in the vault as Frank and a few legionnaires stand guard outside. All participants will have a cacodemon with them to serve as an early warning signal. Once night falls, the plan goes into motion. The mythics explore the vault as the demigods get the sleeping bags ready. Everyone is nervous, but focuses on the task at hand. At 3:00AM, everyone is awake and the cacodemons go into a panic. Soon, the daughter of Pluto pins someone to the wall and a disheveled woman becomes visible. After Hazel draws her blood, the group realizes she is a goddess. Everyone demands to know what the goddess did with the mythics, however she only states that she has brought them to the judged and sentenced before demanding Hazel come with her. The woman unleashes a blast of force that sends Will, Johan, and Orcus flying into the wall. Unfortunately, his attempt to assist causes Laverna to get away from the God of Boundaries. Everyone wonders what the officer's badge means as they go to check on the sentries. Once the group meets up with Frank, Hazel decides to go with Nico and Will to the Courthouse while the son of Mars and the remaining mythics stay behind to safeguard the camp. When the rescue mission fails and Hazel is captured, he joins the rescue party.

Johan looks into Pirithous and, once he has enough knowledge, he shares his findings. Soon, Nico, Will, Frank, and Naomi Solace, Will's mother, comes to him and Semele and he shares his findings. Johan explains that Pirithous spent his entire life living in Theseus's shadow and, when Theseus decided to take Helen of Troy as a wife, he wanted to one up his friend and taking Persephone as a wife. Johan states that as they rested, their bodies fused to a rock in the Fields of Asphodel. Theseus is later freed by Hercules, but Pirithous could not be removed. After Johan is finished, he states his belief that the judges have a plan in case their prison is discovered. When Naomi reveals that the judges plan on overloading the Mist, everyone questions if it is possible. Frank orders everyone to gather supplies for the mission and Will insists his mother not get any more involved.

Once everyone is gathered, Naomi drives Nico, Will, Frank, Lavinia, Yazan, Savannah, Semele, Johan, and Orcus to the enclosure as the demigods and mythics try to get a handle of their enchanted emotions due to the cacodemons. Once the group reach Golden Gate Park, they notice how densely packed the enclosure has become since Naomi found it, as well as the judges and some of their followers. The group notice slivers of fog moving around that he points out is the Mist, which they should not be able to see. Naomi leaves and the group heads toward the enclosure. As Johan and his allies begin to charge, the Mist breaks. Everyone's senses are heightened because of the cacodemons and they start to burn. Everyone is relieved as the group watches as two gods appear and after getting rid of Mary Tudor, Tantalus, and Laverna, Pirithous traps them. Not long after they charge into battle. As fighting and confusion breaks out between the imprisoned mythics and the forces of Pirithous, he and the others reunite with their allies and try to calm the mythics. After the mass illusion stops and Pirithous is captured, Johan and his allies gather around the judge. After Dolus and Apate convince the judge to release his followers, everyone discusses what to do with Pirithous when Hecate arrives. Everyone bows to the Goddess of Magic as Pirithous explains his actions to Hecate. The goddess appears to applaud his actions as she summons a large sheet of rock, calling it a throne. Everyone stays quiet as the judge crawls to the rock and is fused with it before being sent to the Fields of Asphodel. Johan watches as Hecate extracts Semele from Nico and returns her to her physical form. Semele then thanks her allies before going to see someone. Hecate thanks the demigods and mythics before leaving and they take the train back.

Johan and Lucius return to the park to secure the Dodecahedron. Later that day, everyone helps in setting up a farewell dinner for Nico and Will. As they eat, they joke around and afterwards, the praetors and mythics escort the boys and the cacodemons to the gates where Frank and Hazel reveal the mythics will stay at Camp Jupiter as an auxiliary cohort. He reveals that he will continue to work in the archives and they say their final goodbyes.
